Welcome to wifight!

What is ?

wifight is a multiplayer online game designed for your PalmOS Treo smartphone. (Treo 600, 650, 680, 700p, 755p & Centro.)

Play online games against the other players and chat in the chat room. There are 4 main games (plus variations) available right now, with more on the way.

Play your turns in whatever order you choose. The server keeps track of all your games so you don't have to be online at the exact same time as your opponent to make your move. Games can last minutes, hours, weeks, whatever. Take your time, hurry up. The choice is yours.

  • You can get e-mail notifications when it's your turn.
  • You can also chat with the other players in the built-in chatroom.
  • Browse all games ever played on the website. In-client browsing coming soon.
  • The future will bring cool features like rankings, tournaments, avatars, game browsing, and who knows what else. Can't wait!

What games can I play on ?

wifight features Chess, Checkers, Dots & Boxes and Tic-Tac-Toe. It's mostly board games at the moment. I have started on a new physics-based game. That's looking promising. More board games are on the way as well. Oh, and an RPG of some kind. Definitely. And more single-player games.

You can read more about the progress I'm making on the newest games (including some screenshots) at my dev blog. How does work?

  • The game client is a single .prc file and you can install it from the built-in Treo Web browser or via HotSync as usual.
  • The client connects to the central game server over your wireless data connection.
  • Games are turn-based and multiplayer.
  • You can have multiple games going simultaneously.
  • If you're online at the time, moves show up immediately. Otherwise they show up the next time you go back online. You can also choose an email address or SMS gateway to receive notifications when it's your turn.
  • Game data is saved on your Treo so you can review games and even enter your move when offline. Once you go back online your move is submitted automatically.

Can I play ?

Yes! wifight is up and running and free to play. The games work great. There's a chat lobby. It's pretty swell.

Phase 1 was: develop the technology to play the games.
Phase 2 (the current phase) is: build the game-service-y side of things and also develop lots more games. There's a roadmap you can look at that I try to keep updated. You can also read BrenDevLog, my coding/biz blog.

Who's making ?

It is under development by Brennan Underwood (aka basu). That's me. Hi. I started serious development of wifight back in November of 2005, but I've been thinking about creating something like this my whole life. (Of course, when I was 10, I thought in terms of hardware with blinking LEDs and such built into Radio Shack project boxes. What can I say? It was the 80s. And I was 10.)

Also, Daniel Green (aka L1quid) has been kicking butt with the website coding. Thanks Dan!

How can I try ?

  • The easiest way is to enter get.wifight.com into your Treo's web browser. You can download it and install it directly on your Treo. You can also download wifight.prc to your PC with your desktop web browser and then HotSync it over to your Treo.

  • Once it's on your Treo, just run it and you can create your login within the client.
